Dear Former Members and Supporters of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band:
In this close-knit family of ours, we take great pride in the camaraderie and friendship that is developed through our common bond as members of the Aggie Band. Last night, after having watched a beautiful sunset, I received a call from Erin Hawkins, ’08 a former member of the Aggie Band. Erin called to tell me the sad news that her step-father, the man that inspired her to join the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M, John West, class of ’57, had passed away. For the past eight years John had battled the crippling effects of Alzheimer’s disease.
John played trombone in the Aggie Band and for 30 years worked as the Manager of the Photo and Visual Aids Lab at Texas A&M University. For 41 years he also typed the play-by-play summaries for the football games at Kyle Field and basketball games at G. Rollie White. I have known John for many years and developed a rather close friendship with him as we attended meetings of the Washington County A&M Club, and as we saw each other around town in Brenham. Before he was committed to a long-term care facility he was able to see Erin begin her time in the Aggie Band playing the baritone and majoring in Environmental Design. His other step-daughter Kelly Hawkins is now a member of the U. S. Marine Corps Band. I know that John was so proud of Erin’s decision to join the Aggie Band and Kelly’s commitment to serve our nation.
His wife, Sue commented to me that as his illness progressed John always “loved to receive a note or a visit from his Aggie buddies.” Erin informed me that in lieu of flowers, family has chosen to have memorial donations made to the Texas Aggie Band Association along with two other of John’s favorite organizations.
John’s funeral service will be on Thursday, July 17th, at 10:00 AM at the St. Peters Lutheran in Gay Hill north of Brenham. Internment will be in the church cemetery.
As President of the Texas Aggie Band Association, I will represent us at the funeral. I would ask that each of you keep John’s wife and family in your prayers.
Thanks Ags, and Gig’em!
